A digital village

An african village joins the global communication network

You may not be aware of the Entasopia community center in Kenya but technology has been able to put this sleepy rural area on the digital map and this is how it was done:

with a VSAT- ( very small aperture terminal)

a satellite dish

a solar panel

routers,  servers

computers and

the purchase of bandwidth at the rate of €700 a month from a provider.
The partners in this initiative are O3b, an internet start and Inveneo, a not for profit group working on getting africa connnected to the global communication netwok.

La poste gets ahead

Get your stamps online

There is something like an IT passion in the management policy of the french postal service provider and I am basing my point on the following elements:

-long before the proliferation of cybercafés, it started the cyberpoint internet service by installing apple macintosh computers in some agencies as farback as 1997  I was one of the early users of this system that is now phased out.

-four or five year ago, it rolled out a package tracking service not to mention the advantage of its brokerage services  to retail investors and now the postal and banking services group is offering the opportunity to get your stamps online from this interface.

The IT policy…

The IT policy of the new president of the United States

There will be a fundamental change in the IT policy of the new administration and here are some indications:

-to build more internet infrastructure such as wireless networks, high internet connection and more telephone lines.

-numerous initiatives in favor of a safer network and the creation of the posts of technology and security advisers are part of the proposals contained in a policy paper in circulation among  specialists in the office of transition.

Public records online

I think this experience is the beginning of a new way of doing history because the policy makers at the Seine-et-Marne records office have put all their collections online. http://archives.seine-et-marne.fr/index.html . Here you have public records going back to the end of 1880 covering local history, civil registers and photos.

Law enforcement

Recent events in two former countries under the control of the soviet union demonstrated the importance of the internet war or the need for electronic security. With the waves of security breaches  appearing on the web sites of www.sans.org and may others every day, it is imperative to stress that there is now a government body responsible for online law enforcement and the current issue of PC Expert contains an article on how state organs are fighting data destruction, e-mail frauds and denial of services.

e-law enforcememnt

For an overview of the latest database of oracle(oracle 11g), one needs to peruse one article captioned “Inside oracle databse 11g” in a recent issue of profit magazine. But that is not all, as another product of this multinational group supports data about geographical location with or without wifi connection. And it is this product(mufrs-mobile unit field reporting system) that is used by law enforcement agents when they want to  track civil and criminal issuesq.
