The cost of IT

Business Week carried an article last year on the state of IT projects in  the public sector and one of the important items in the current issue of Economist is the fact that, IT is cheapter than other forms of communication. E-police stations/desks

The project for a technology-based police station is currently under review in France. To those familiar with the initiative, the cybercommissariat (e-police desks/stations) will investigate cases of theft and criminal activities online backed with software to control the computers of those under criminal investigation. The electronic police stations will be a compulsory one stop  point for those who want to lodge complaints pertaining to online frauds.

e-mail and soc.gen

Extracts of the rogue trader questioning by investigators published in the IHT of this week hinted that the executive forged numerous e-mails to justify his fictitious buy and sell orders thus making observers to ask these questions:

-why was it difficult for the network administsrators to identify the fake orders?
-why was it difficult for external service providers to detect the fake e-mails?
-Is it possible for a person with a thorough understanding of e-mail routing system to forge electronic communication?

Pending the emergence of the truth the efforts of thousands of employees are jeopardized.. at least for the moment.
