This is the second thread on how the candidate of the democratic party used technology to attain his political goals. The machine at the center of this strategy is the web site of mybarrackobama.com and what I found very interesting in one iht article on the subject is how the option to:
-join a local group
-create events
-sign up for updates
-and send up personal fundraising pages
were put at the disposal of visitors to this web site. Again, the iht article also covered the how facebook, the purchase of online advertising and video were integrated into the camapign objectives of the presidential candidate. And before you asked me this question, I am stating here that the campaign was handled by this web agency: www.bluestatedigital.com

A company recently organized a meeting with participants in the USA, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong by using CISCO technologies, thus saving time and millions of dollars. But it comes with a cost and CISCO is one of the companies that is a leader in this sector.

The IT infrastructure of shell
Image the number of PC’s and the computer network in the headquarters of a multinational company like Shell with legal, marketing, hr, seismic, exploration, production, trading and transportation departments. Try to visualise the amount of e-mail, application, database and web servers and the network in each department. Not to mention the virtual private network to connect with all the offices of the company around the world and once you can get a clear image of the IT situation you can understand the challenges of running the IT department.
With this gigantic IT infrastructure and a budget of $4 billion the company recently selected these three service providers to run its IT infrastructure:
http://business.att.com will handle all the company storage and hosting needs
http://www.telekom.com will oversee the day-to-day operation of the company cutomer relations services and
http://www.eds.com will be in charge of matters related to end user computer services. And do you know the mission statement of the three service providers “use technology to enhance corporate performances.”

Observers have been following the US elections with real interest and this is how the would be candidate of the democratic party used the Internet as part of his campaign strategy:
-the campaign team retained the services of a customer-service center to enable enquiries coming to their office be handled by a human voice.
-they also used laptops to contact every candidate on the voters list
-exploited all the potentials of social networking web sites like facebook
backed with thematic web sites and blogs at grass roots level.

The paper-based public transit pass known as carte orange is to be replaced with navigo. The new public transit ticketing system(www.navigo.fr) is similar to a library or credit card but it is for the storage of transport fares. Delivered after completing a registration process and the payment of a registration fee, the use of the new ticketing system is simply by passing the card(after purchasing the appropriate transport fares) on a purple band at the top of the turnstile to facilitate passenger’s movement.

If only there is peace in the middle east the following example is the shape of betterthings to come. Let usbear in mind that the two communities are separated by a wall and after many ears of unheavals, an IT project is trying to change the pace of things:
-A company called G.H.O.ST operating in Israel uses video conferencing to get in touch with another company in Ramalah because its executive cannot come to israel for security and administrative reasons.
-Although far from one another, the two partners have been working on a collaborative work using applications such as google docs and Thinkfree to create a computer environment that is not tied to any application from any web interface.
-The internet-based virtual computer is in beta stage and through this project what politicians cannot achieve, IT people are making it possible and I am sure that this is the beginning of a new era in middle east politics.

Using online chat as part of sales and marketing efforts
Many companies are now using online chats as part of their marketing policy Because it is cheaper, quicker and easier for prospective clients to ask questions, evaluate the level of technical support and the cost of a particular service in the information technology sector. In the course of the last three months I have seen IT, payment service providers, publishers and customer relations management agencies use online chats as part of marketing efforts and it works.

E-government is a stark reality of administrative life in France. For instance, 600 000 tax payers made their fiscal declaration online two years ago and last year the number of online declarations reached 7 million. At the beginning of this experience users complained of pages that took ages to download, web requests that returned no page display to the extent that the last day for the declaration were extended. For this year, all these inconveniences are now things of the past as information request on the web site improved substantially. The special add on for this session is that those without internet connection just have to call a telephone number to confirm their declaration. Well as for the type of web server, the database(open-source or proprietary) that is powering the entire system and the application server… these are confidential information and I don’t have these information.
